A short beginner’s guide to buying vintage Ray-Ban sunglasses

New to vintage Ray-Ban? What to know, where to go & how to get it.

So what are vintage Ray-Ban sunglasses & why buy them?

Ray-Ban is arguably the most famous sunglass brand in the world. Worn & desired by millions. But did you know it started its life in the USA back in the late 1930's? Created in 1937 by the American company Bausch & Lomb. These days its owned by the world's largest eyewear company, the Italian conglomerate that is Luxottica.

In 1999 Luxottica or 'Lux' for short bought the brand from Bausch & Lomb (B&L) for what now seems quite a low figure of a reported US$640million.

Over that period of just over 60 years Ray-Ban was the go to brand for people looking for a pair sunglasses, that offered quality, style, design and protection.

The very fact that this famous brand in its original format is no longer produced and hasn't been for 20 years, adds to the desire for people who want a piece of history to wear. They say "they don't make them like they use to", in my opinion, is the very fabric and goes to the heart of why I love vintage Ray-Bans. Im not the only one. Just go onto the auction site Ebay and see for yourself. 1000's of listings. People trading this piece of vintage fashion worldwide and the most popular models selling for 100's of dollars. Increasing in value every year.

Many sunglass designs these days are simply imitations. Copies of vintage Ray-Bans that were released back in the 1990s and earlier. The lens technology, more than likely a vintage Ray-Ban rip off. You can't reinvent the wheel, so owning an original pair of vintage Ray-Ban sunglasses is the ultimate style choice.

Don't get it twisted, Lux Ray-Ban are good but vintage B&L Ray-Ban sunglasses are still the number 1 choice.

People always asking me where can I buy from?

So you've seen a friend wearing a pair. You found a pair that grandpa use to wear. You've heard lots of positive things. You've been watching Youtube videos and seen Instagram posts and you now want your own?

But you're not sure where to go, where to look, where to find and where to visit.

This is probably one of the most frequent questions I get asked via my various platforms.

Well of course, there's only one place to visit and that's right here on BLRayBanUK. For all your vintage Ray-Ban needs!

However, if I don't have what you're looking for then the 2nd place you can look is the auction site Ebay.

Ebay is probably the best place for someone to start looking to purchase a vintage pair of Ray-Bans, simply because the number of sellers. Prices are competitive and you have every opportunity to purchase a pair within your budget, simply because of the auction style format. Whether you're a 1st time end user or becoming a collector, Ebay offers a lot of options.

Remember, there are other well known auction sites available.

Now, some will ask the question of why I would promote what is essentially a competitor. Here's why.

Ebay is not my competitor or rival. Its not a secret. I don't have every model that Ray-Ban ever released available for purchase. And most importantly, I'm an enthusiast, who wants my hobby, my interest, to expand and reach new corners of the world.

My site offers much more than Ebay. It not only gives you the opportunity to purchase some of the worlds most wonderful sunglass models, but it presents you with history, pictures, information and social interaction into the vintage Ray-Ban world that Ebay cannot provide.

Ebay offers you choice. I offer a better experience.
